Tis the Season for a Gorgeous Cardigan
Dear Reader, it is the season for fluttering, artisan summer dresses in organic cotton, silk, linen and gossamer merino and the joy of bare legs... But don't forget your favourite forever cardigan. A cardigan is a slow understated fashion suit of armour in case the sun suddenly disappears behind a cloud or on breezy summer days beside the sea.
There's nothing worse than finding oneself underdressed at an open air cinema, al fresco restaurant or summer wedding and suffering as you quietly freeze to death. Of course, you could always steal you man's jumper. Better still, always carry a cardigan. Oversized, cropped or swingy, there is nothing the cardigan can't pull off with aplomb. Make a beeline for gauzy cashmere, merino wool and silk as they will provide warmth when the weather turns inclement. Brora, the slow Scottish knitwear marque is adept at pulling off the perfect cashmere cardigan in magnetic Fairisle, iconic waves or jewel paintbox colours. N Peal, Hayley Menzies and Barrie also have the best cardigans, handcrafted to last many happy summers, whatever the weather in eye catching block colours, intarsia designs or extraordinary, charismatic tigers, leopards and panthers.
Dine Beside the Seaside at Robert Thompson's Cafe Grill in Ryde
Take the train from London in the morning and arrive in time for a slothful, elegant gastronomic seaside lunch at chef Robert Thompson's MBE swish new RT Cafe and Grill, just minutes from the railway and ferry terminus in Ryde. Thompson was 23, when he became the youngest British chef to attain his first Michelin Star at Winteringham Fields in Northumberland.
The Return of the Cafe Grill and Classical Gastronomy
On high summer days, when the weather is set fair, dine al fresco and gaze out over dreamy, ciaroscuro views of the Solent. The classical menu pays homage to the great fin de siecle cafes in London, Vienna and Paris with an evocative menu that includes the house grass-fed beef burger, native lobster with shellfish mayonnaise, or thermidor; gnocchi primavera with asparagus, woodland mushrooms and grand Padano; Rockefeller or assiette of oysters and to finish a perfectly executed cafe mocha delice. Robert Thompson is a passionate champion of slow, artisan food and the best produce from the island's abundant larder on land and sea. Thompson's fine dining restaurant will return at the same venue in the autumn of 2024.
